Wii Attach Rate 8 to 1 in December

posted by (W-) on 2008-01-25 02:58:45 [#981] (g)
W-Players bought 8 games for every Wii sold in December
W-I've had a Wii since launch, its my only next-gen console, and I only have 6 games
W-3 of which suck
W-Who are these poor fools with 10 to 15 Wii games bringing up the average from the rest of us?

tkurcwhich 3 suck?

Tentative Deal Reached on Economic Stimulus Package - washingtonpost.com

tkurc$300 tax rebate? Did we invade the Spidarean Homeworld?

W-Tricky Dick Fun Bills didn't discriminate against those of us who make more than minimum wage
W-I won't be able to buy a single cup of coffee towards a massive temporal acceleration with the $0 I'll receive
W-I'm actually in the demographic likely to spend the $300 as intended
W-Stupid pointless gestures that exclude me!

tkurcI think I'll buy a talking tattoo

Movie trivia question/curiosity

posted by (W-) on 2008-01-22 00:54:17 [#977] (c)
W-What movies can you think of where the entire story takes place within a 24 hour timeframe or less
W-Or perhaps 99% of the story, forgiving a beginning or ending scene outside of that time
W-Super bonus points for 8 hours or less?

FoibaeGoonies?

W-Resident Evil should be under a day...
W-I thought the two Matrix sequels took place in very little time, but the original time frames drag out in reality

FoibaeAny Back to the Future, in a sense
FoibaePulp Fiction

W-I seem to remember Marty McFly sleeping a night in several of those movies, so that doesn't sound right

Foibaeok, Night of the Living Dead
FoibaeDie Hard
FoibaeDie Hard 2: Die Harder

W-Die Hard With a Vengeance

FoibaeLive Free or Die Harder might've been over 24 hours'

W-I don't think John McClane got a chance to sleep though
W-But it seemed to be more like 36 hours

FoibaeJohn McClane doesn't need to sleep

W-Damn straight.
W-Inside Man would have to forgive the last few scenes of the film

FoibaeLabyrinth? She had the 24 hour time limit

W-Yeah when the first scene of Matrix Reloaded comes up, they say its 9 hours until Zion is destroyed, but between the two films it goes more like 40 hours than 10
W-Cube, Cube Two, Cube Zero, i submit

Foibaewe can go to shitty movies, like johnny mnemonic

W-And if you get a gimmicky Back to the Future, I claim a gimmicky Primer :)
W-Johnny Mnemonic has the microwave blasting uberdolphin, that redeems any film

FoibaeBladerunner?
FoibaeI think Bladerunner counts

W-Bladerunner would have to forgive the first scene, right?
W-War of the Worlds? Nah, more like 48 hours?

FoibaeWar of the Worlds was a couple of days
FoibaeMen in Black 2

W-Four Rooms?
W-Four Rooms might come in under 8 hours, even

FoibaeEvil Dead 1 comes under 8 hours

W-I suppose it has to be said... Groundhog Day, but in fact, it takes place over potentially hundreds of years
W-Airplane, Airplane 2?
W-Feels like cheating, but Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run)
W-Fifth Element obviously gives up the opening egypt scene
W-Hero is cheating since its all done in flashbacks

FoibaeLuke Perry doesn't count
FoibaeEl Mariachi
Foibaepossibly Desperado

W-Ferris Bueller or Breakfast Club?

FoibaeI'd count those two

W-American Graffiti :)
W-I think Cloverfield qualifies, forgiving the first scene, but passage of time is really tough to gauge
W-Shaun of the Dead?
W-OK, I've looked over several big long lists of many many movies, and this is all I got
W-I'll suggest The Fountain as the most opposite of these goals

tkurcIsn't the movie "Rope" supposed to be done in one shot? Making it however long the movie is?
tkurcI think "Nick of Time" was supposed to be real time also

W-Suggestions from co-workers today: Three Kings, Black Hawk Down, It's a Wonderful Life, and ahem Adventures in Babysitting
W-And, obviously, Time Machine beats The Fountain for longest span at 800,000 years

Some interesting Team Fortress 2 stats

posted by (W-) on 2007-12-09 16:17:44 [#971] (w)
W-Bunch of idiots playing too much scout, being really sucky engineers and reasonably sucky medics, and playing too much gravelpit
W-Stunningly low accomplishment rate implies most of the players haven't played for more than an hour or two.
W-Looks like only ~30% of players spent any actual time playing.
W-Most people definitely suck at defending the street dustbowl mission.

So I've watched the movie Primer three times now

posted by (W-) on 2007-12-07 22:16:20 [#970] (v)
W-And I'm a pretty goddamned smart guy
W-But I still don't entirely get what happens
W-I love the film, its as intense of experience one can get from a seemingly quiet, monotonic, indie film
W-The Prestige has nothing on Primer in terms of figuring out what was really happening during the movie
W-Thinking about it differently, I can't think of a spoiler that would actually be a spoiler

W-... that when you clear 4 lines at once, it's called "a tetris"
W-But I found someone in their 20s who had no idea
W-Although I didn't have a satisfactory answer to how I knew it was called a tetris

Absolute Gadget - First Vista-only games cracked

W-Cracked to run on XP
W-I'd really rather not upgrade to Vista until I get the 10%-20% DX10 overhead efficiency performance boost I was promised, so this is interesting news.

, Clamato Energy Drink!

posted by (tkurc) on 2007-05-29 22:15:16 [#956]
tkurcfinally, a drink that satisfies my lust for clam with my desire for more energy

W-"lust for clam"?

tkurcsadly, I'd likely purchase this product if offered at my grocer
tkurcman, now I want some

W-Can't you just go down to the bay and get yourself some clams?

tkurcthis page needs a "where to buy" link
tkurcwikipedia claims that this product is aimed at hispanics. maybe my sister will find some in arizona

W-Aimed? Like a weapon?
W-Warning: Pants does not condone aiming Clamato weapons at Hispanics.
W-Maybe your sister will find Hispanics?

tkurcyes. products are aimed like weapons

So I use a microwave a lot

posted by (W-) on 2007-05-28 21:05:22 [#955]
W-But the one i have sucks and should be replaced
W-Is there some kind of like, fancy microwave?
W-Besides something that is just ridiculously powerful
W-Some sort of fancy combination convection/microwave oven?
W-I use the damn thing so much it seems I should invest in it a little

tkurcwhat makes a microwave suck?
tkurcslow cooking?

W-The door is broken and its old and cheap
W-Just seems like a guy should be able to spend some money on a nice microwave and end up with something other than just 3000 W

tkurcthe turbochef ovens are supposed to brown as they microwave

W-Is that optional? Not sure I want everything I have browned

tkurcunfortunately, it looks like they don't have a countertop version
tkurcturbochef home offerings

W-What experience do you have with such a thing?

tkurcI've seen these used at subway

W-$10,000 is probably a little higher than I was thinking

tkurcthats the commercial variety

W-I can get pretty fucking hungry

tkurcthey cook frozen pizzas (and brown them) in like 2 minutes

W-So what's the ~$1000 home variety equivalent?

FoibaeWe've got a big commercial one sitting in the backroom at school. They don't want to install it because they want us to actually learn how to cook

tkurcgoogling... please hold
tkurcI think turbochef patented their "technologies"
tkurcit appears that the latest and greatest residential microwave technology is the "microwave/convection oven"

W-Gimme!

tkurclink

W-Uh, how do I choose?
W-I will not be ruled by the tyranny of choice!

tkurcgo to amazon, search for "convection microwave", sort by "bestselling", peruse reviews
tkurcthis one looks nice

W-What would Tony get?

tkurcthat one

W-But its so cheap!

tkurcyeah, well... it makes tuna melts. what else you want?

posted by (W-) on 2007-05-20 15:11:36 [#952]
W-After the idea was part of an art project something like 5 years ago
W-So rarely do people stick with ideas like that

tkurcyeah, well, I find labels on keys to be something that doesn't matter a whole lot.

W-While we all recognize how superior Tony is to the rest of the world, I was congratulating their dedication and hard work, not the usefulness of the product.

tkurcback in the day, when cathedrals were built out of stone, one person would work on a "product" for their entire life. A couple years is nothing.

W-What is your point, exactly?

tkurcI had a point?

W-No, it sounds like you're just being cranky.

tkurcI'd say that summarizes my point quite well
