This is Relevant to Foiba's Interests
| (w_) | "Star Trek: The Next Generation"/"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" strongman Ronald D. Moore, who went on to serve as showrunner for "Carnivale," "Roswell," "Battlestar Galactica" and "Caprica," has just received a greenlight for his new pilot for NBC. |
| (w_) | Now provisionally titled "17th Precinct," it's about cops in a world ruled by magic. |
![]() | Foiba, what would you have titled this show? 17th Precinct evokes nothing about cops in a world ruled by magic |
![]() | "Ronald D. Moore presents: '17th Precinct'" |
![]() | Since his sci-fi show was all about mysticism, I hope his magic show is all about logical and rational explanations |
![]() | I stand corrected |
![]() | remind me not to ever get excited about anything ever again |
![]() | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0903624/fullcredits |
![]() | at least I wasn't as wrong as warren was here |
![]() | unless someone came in and tinkered with the recipe, i was not technically wrong |
so, my thoughts on dragon age
![]() | its gameplay is better suited to a console than Mass Effect |
![]() | it felt like mass effect was more open ended, sandbox like, because of the planetary exploration |
![]() | the dwarf quest really wasn't fun at all. i just wanted to slaughter all the dwarves instead of help them |
![]() | playing without magic has been really challenging. this is good and bad. was fun to play without it... but it was so much powerful when they forced me to use a magic user |
![]() | the abilities (or whatever herbalism and poison making are) wasn't very interesting to me. would have been nice if it had something to do with the class of the character. |
![]() | I missed the evil/good meter from mass effect and kotor |
![]() | that being said, they created a fun universe |
![]() | And now, the dissenting opinion. |
![]() | I am the dissention opinion |
![]() | Clearly, several of these issues are rooted in the Baldur's Gate-style heritage of the title, not the KOTOR heritage you prefer from BioWare |
![]() | That bodes well for your enjoyment of the upcoming Mass Effect 2 |
![]() | which part is so clear? |
![]() | The dwarf part of the game is one of the most complete RPG adventures ever created, a whole separate world onto itself |
![]() | yes, but the story sucked |
![]() | So, Tony, it's been 13 months, how about Mass Effect 2? |
![]() | I shall partake |
due to a progamming error, pants was not 2k9 compliant
![]() | thank goodness for a new year |
![]() | I like the mini single tile pictures |
![]() | how is the musk-ox going to make babies?! |
![]() | Yeah, I don't know what to do with the horse and musk-ox. I suppose I'll have to slaughter them someday? Make some nice leather pants? |
![]() | can you trade with other ... fortresses? |
![]() | or go scout the wild for more animals? |
![]() | I think the first traders come in winter, yeah maybe I'll either buy another animal or sell the one I have |
![]() | There are other wild animals here, but not horses and musk-oxes, they aren't native to this region. |
Mario Theme On Bottles Played By RC Car is Today's BIG Thing - APR 17, 2008
Last night's episode of Boston Legal ("The Court Supreme")
![]() | One of the finest bits of television I've ever had the pleasure to watch |
![]() | A phenomenal example of character-driven writing |
![]() | It furthered the lock that Alan Shore holds on my list of all-time favorite characters across all fiction |
![]() | If you can't be bothered to watch the whole episode, you should at least watch Alan Shore's greatest monologue |
Someone Needs to Make a Creepy Movie Based on This

Smash Bros. Experts Share Their Secrets news from 1UP.com
![]() | SSBB a step backwards? |
![]() | If you're a competitive playing professional Smash player, who plays without items and bans most stages, apparently it is |
![]() | Not particularly relevant to anyone else though |
I've gotta stop watching Dexter and New Amsterdam together
![]() | Because now I think that Dexter is immortal |
![]() | And John Amsterdam is a serial killer |
I had the Magnet Man tune in my head today
![]() | That's Magnet Man, not Lobster Magnet, which is equally awesome musically and has also been stuck in my head off-and-on the last 8 years |
![]() | And, just because I can, here's a link to Bananaphone |
![]() | we need one of these for pants |
![]() | I think "amionpants.com" would get more hits than our actual site |
Gamasutra - Microsoft Excel: Revolutionary 3D Game Engine?
![]() | Psh, Excel amateurs. |
It's the Pants! five year anniversary
![]() | So, what'd you get me? |
![]() | the gift of having to google what I was just talking about. |
![]() | enjoy it. |
![]() | Also, the bitterness. |
![]() | The bitterness is always gratis. |
OK, that's it, I'm removing Smash Lab from my TiVo Season Passes
![]() | There's just so many things profoundly wrong with the show |
![]() | Not only are the hosts so dumb, inexperienced, and naive, but the premise itself betrays their inadequacies much more than Mythbusters would |
![]() | They're not just trying to recreate crazy things, they're trying to implement solutions that might be useful and practical in the real world |
![]() | But their solutions would frequently cost 100 times what the budget for such items would be |
![]() | They fail to see all the real-world engineering issues with their atrocious designs and concepts |
![]() | They apply none of the rigor and thought that would be expected of the simplest of entry-level engineers |
![]() | Their last episode, with the magnetic fire escape elevator, so totally missed the fact that if you have 90 pound people and 350 pound people (a pretty god-damned common situation in a big building), your design will move too fast for the fatties and will not budge for the skinnies |
![]() | And with reprehensible irresponsibility, not once did they lower their audience's expectations for solutions like this by mentioning the extreme cost of rare earth or neodymium magnets, especially in that quantity |
![]() | So next time there's a disaster, some poor building engineer will have to answer to why he didn't implement a safety system more expensive than the building because of this stupid fucking show |
![]() | |
![]() | I've never seen the show (I think), but I'll join Spartacus in his boycott! |
![]() | I'm totally getting one of these when they come out (hopefully in a few weeks) |
![]() | Its exactly what I'm looking for |
![]() | Alternatively, a cheaper but much more unknown option |
![]() | Apparently, fatties don't use seatbelts since they cut into their corpulent girth |
![]() | "I hate seat belts because they always seem to ride up and strangle me," said Peggy Howell, the public relations director for the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance. |
![]() | The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance? |
![]() | Really? |
![]() | You've gotta be an awfully ugly lonely fatty to want to wake up every day trying to convince the world that being fat is, in fact, cool |
![]() | I'm so glad I don't work in an industry where I would have to worry whether my product is useable by the morbidly obese |
I just watched a fucked up commercial
![]() | Where one brand of fitness water was claiming how much better it was than another brand since it had 25 calories instead of 125 |
![]() | And all of the people in the commercial were acting surprised that you could get a bottle of water with only 25 calories |
![]() | What a miracle of science! |
![]() |
I'm not sure I remember yelling "Idiots!" at my TV so much
![]() | As watching the train airbag episode of Smash Lab |
![]() | What a bunch of young, stupid, fucking idiots |
A Scathing Commentary on the Modern Child-man
![]() | one of my favourite directors is directing the hobbit! |
![]() | I actually liked "The Hobbit", as opposed to LOTR |
![]() | and del toro actually has made good movies, unlike Jackson |
![]() | yes, I'm looking at you, Frighteners |
![]() | I hated Pan's Labyrinth, it was a story of a drunk wife beater instead of what all the previews made it out to be |
![]() | And the previews for Hellboy II seem like a departure in the wrong direction |
![]() | And he's working on twelve other projects right now |
![]() | Come 2011, we'll come back to this thread and see if my skepticism was justified |
![]() | like the internet will be around then. |
![]() | my guess is that the guy who played Abe Sapien will play Gollum |
![]() | take that, 2011 |
![]() | so, does making one bad movie instantly make someone a bad director? |
![]() | it just instills skepticism into a franchise that is switching directors |
![]() | Blade II was better than Blade |
![]() | Even though he did good stuff in the 80s and 90s, I won't see another sci-fi Spielberg movie after he butchered AI, Minority Report, and War of the Worlds |
![]() | I kind of liked Minority Report. The ads that followed them around were cool. |
![]() | I liked Blade III. I thought Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel were in their best roles of their careers |
![]() | thats not saying much. Their track records are only hair better than peter jackson |
...
![]() | I swear that every user comment on Youtube is in fact dynamically generated content from a bot designed to use the most perfectly poor and atrocious English |
![]() | There's no other explanation that my mind will accept. |
![]() | There's no way that so many real people so consistently use such unfathomably wrong English. |
![]() | Humanity is doomed. |
![]() | you are reading Youtube comments for the wrong reasons |
![]() | you can't find a badass Queen video without thousands of comments about how they've accepted that Freddie Mercury was gay, but they've accepted that |
![]() | interestingly I didn't really notice youtube videos had comments |
![]() | I think fark trained me to ignore comments |
![]() | plus, I hate other people's opinions |
![]() | present company excluded |
When The Empire Strikes Back came out...
![]() | It was poorly received and underperformed at the box office, as it didn't match the expectations of a Star Wars sequel |
![]() | Without ROTJ and an understanding of the larger story, themes, and universe, the reaction to ESB could be understood |
![]() | Now, nearly 5 years after the final Matrix installment, I'm curious what you guys think was the best film, looking back with a longer perspective |
![]() | I still prefer the 2nd one, which was an unpopular preference at the time |
![]() | Same question goes for the Star Wars prequels, which while Phantom Menace is nearly 9 years old, ROTS is not yet 3 |
![]() | I think that, if you suspend disbelief through the bad emotions and dialogue of Anakin and Padme, both AOTC and ROTS are pretty darn good times |
![]() | I still don't know what to think about the matrix |
![]() | I liked the 1st a lot, and it stands well on its own |
![]() | I liked the 3rd because my expectations were low, and I had fun watching things blow up |
![]() | OK? We'll come back to it in another 5 years? 2013 it is! |
![]() | I'll set my alarm clock |
I never would have come up with this myself...
![]() | After 20 years, I encounter someone who thinks the recreational facilities on the Enterprise D are "hollow decks" |
![]() | Technically correct |
![]() | Yeah, which made me wonder why it actually took 20 years for me to see someone use it |
![]() | Of course, this person wasn't trying to be clever. They were stupid. |
![]() | Honestly, i don't think anyone has ever thought that was a double-entendre |
![]() | Or a 1.5 entendre |
![]() | The phrase is used sparsely on the web |
![]() | But not usually in a TNG context |
![]() | But there's about 100 profoundly misguided people |
![]() | "Hollow Deck Hibachi Grill" item on the Star Trek Vegas restaurant menu |
![]() | I suppose it isn't spelled out as "Holodeck" too frequently in canon |
![]() | But still, what would make about one in one million people think it was "hollow deck" |
![]() | Who will support the hollowgram's fight for human rights? |
![]() | Was there never a clever reference to The Doctor as a "hollow man" ? |
![]() | I would've remembered |
![]() | Haha, i just searched for ("hollow deck" shakespeare) to be sure, since that would be the only reason they'd use those words in a Trek show |
![]() | And it's just more Trek sites |
![]() | Wait, it was used in "Julius Caesar" |
Wii Attach Rate 8 to 1 in December
![]() | Players bought 8 games for every Wii sold in December |
![]() | I've had a Wii since launch, its my only next-gen console, and I only have 6 games |
![]() | 3 of which suck |
![]() | Who are these poor fools with 10 to 15 Wii games bringing up the average from the rest of us? |
![]() | which 3 suck? |
Tentative Deal Reached on Economic Stimulus Package - washingtonpost.com
![]() | $300 tax rebate? Did we invade the Spidarean Homeworld? |
![]() | Tricky Dick Fun Bills didn't discriminate against those of us who make more than minimum wage |
![]() | I won't be able to buy a single cup of coffee towards a massive temporal acceleration with the $0 I'll receive |
![]() | I'm actually in the demographic likely to spend the $300 as intended |
![]() | Stupid pointless gestures that exclude me! |
![]() | I think I'll buy a talking tattoo |
Two men who clearly share the same vision
![]() | Err, or not... |
![]() | They at least share a fondness for eccentric hair |
Movie trivia question/curiosity
![]() | What movies can you think of where the entire story takes place within a 24 hour timeframe or less |
![]() | Or perhaps 99% of the story, forgiving a beginning or ending scene outside of that time |
![]() | Super bonus points for 8 hours or less? |
![]() | Goonies? |
![]() | Resident Evil should be under a day... |
![]() | I thought the two Matrix sequels took place in very little time, but the original time frames drag out in reality |
![]() | Any Back to the Future, in a sense |
![]() | Pulp Fiction |
![]() | I seem to remember Marty McFly sleeping a night in several of those movies, so that doesn't sound right |
![]() | ok, Night of the Living Dead |
![]() | Die Hard |
![]() | Die Hard 2: Die Harder |
![]() | Die Hard With a Vengeance |
![]() | Live Free or Die Harder might've been over 24 hours' |
![]() | I don't think John McClane got a chance to sleep though |
![]() | But it seemed to be more like 36 hours |
![]() | John McClane doesn't need to sleep |
![]() | Damn straight. |
![]() | Inside Man would have to forgive the last few scenes of the film |
![]() | Labyrinth? She had the 24 hour time limit |
![]() | Yeah when the first scene of Matrix Reloaded comes up, they say its 9 hours until Zion is destroyed, but between the two films it goes more like 40 hours than 10 |
![]() | Cube, Cube Two, Cube Zero, i submit |
![]() | we can go to shitty movies, like johnny mnemonic |
![]() | And if you get a gimmicky Back to the Future, I claim a gimmicky Primer :) |
![]() | Johnny Mnemonic has the microwave blasting uberdolphin, that redeems any film |
![]() | Bladerunner? |
![]() | I think Bladerunner counts |
![]() | Bladerunner would have to forgive the first scene, right? |
![]() | War of the Worlds? Nah, more like 48 hours? |
![]() | War of the Worlds was a couple of days |
![]() | Men in Black 2 |
![]() | Four Rooms? |
![]() | Four Rooms might come in under 8 hours, even |
![]() | Evil Dead 1 comes under 8 hours |
![]() | I suppose it has to be said... Groundhog Day, but in fact, it takes place over potentially hundreds of years |
![]() | Airplane, Airplane 2? |
![]() | Feels like cheating, but Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) |
![]() | Fifth Element obviously gives up the opening egypt scene |
![]() | Hero is cheating since its all done in flashbacks |
![]() | Luke Perry doesn't count |
![]() | El Mariachi |
![]() | possibly Desperado |
![]() | Ferris Bueller or Breakfast Club? |
![]() | I'd count those two |
![]() | American Graffiti :) |
![]() | I think Cloverfield qualifies, forgiving the first scene, but passage of time is really tough to gauge |
![]() | Shaun of the Dead? |
![]() | OK, I've looked over several big long lists of many many movies, and this is all I got |
![]() | I'll suggest The Fountain as the most opposite of these goals |
![]() | Isn't the movie "Rope" supposed to be done in one shot? Making it however long the movie is? |
![]() | I think "Nick of Time" was supposed to be real time also |
![]() | Suggestions from co-workers today: Three Kings, Black Hawk Down, It's a Wonderful Life, and ahem Adventures in Babysitting |
![]() | And, obviously, Time Machine beats The Fountain for longest span at 800,000 years |
