w_"Star Trek: The Next Generation"/"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" strongman Ronald D. Moore, who went on to serve as showrunner for "Carnivale," "Roswell," "Battlestar Galactica" and "Caprica," has just received a greenlight for his new pilot for NBC.
w_Now provisionally titled "17th Precinct," it's about cops in a world ruled by magic.
W-Foiba, what would you have titled this show? 17th Precinct evokes nothing about cops in a world ruled by magic
Foiba"Ronald D. Moore presents: '17th Precinct'"
W-Since his sci-fi show was all about mysticism, I hope his magic show is all about logical and rational explanations

tkurcits gameplay is better suited to a console than Mass Effect
tkurcit felt like mass effect was more open ended, sandbox like, because of the planetary exploration
tkurcthe dwarf quest really wasn't fun at all. i just wanted to slaughter all the dwarves instead of help them
tkurcplaying without magic has been really challenging. this is good and bad. was fun to play without it... but it was so much powerful when they forced me to use a magic user
tkurcthe abilities (or whatever herbalism and poison making are) wasn't very interesting to me. would have been nice if it had something to do with the class of the character.
tkurcI missed the evil/good meter from mass effect and kotor
tkurcthat being said, they created a fun universe
W-And now, the dissenting opinion.
tkurcI am the dissention opinion
W-Clearly, several of these issues are rooted in the Baldur's Gate-style heritage of the title, not the KOTOR heritage you prefer from BioWare
W-That bodes well for your enjoyment of the upcoming Mass Effect 2
tkurcwhich part is so clear?
W-The dwarf part of the game is one of the most complete RPG adventures ever created, a whole separate world onto itself
tkurcyes, but the story sucked
W-So, Tony, it's been 13 months, how about Mass Effect 2?
tkurcI shall partake

tkurcI like the mini single tile pictures
tkurchow is the musk-ox going to make babies?!
W-Yeah, I don't know what to do with the horse and musk-ox. I suppose I'll have to slaughter them someday? Make some nice leather pants?
tkurccan you trade with other ... fortresses?
tkurcor go scout the wild for more animals?
W-I think the first traders come in winter, yeah maybe I'll either buy another animal or sell the one I have
W-There are other wild animals here, but not horses and musk-oxes, they aren't native to this region.

W-There's just so many things profoundly wrong with the show
W-Not only are the hosts so dumb, inexperienced, and naive, but the premise itself betrays their inadequacies much more than Mythbusters would
W-They're not just trying to recreate crazy things, they're trying to implement solutions that might be useful and practical in the real world
W-But their solutions would frequently cost 100 times what the budget for such items would be
W-They fail to see all the real-world engineering issues with their atrocious designs and concepts
W-They apply none of the rigor and thought that would be expected of the simplest of entry-level engineers
W-Their last episode, with the magnetic fire escape elevator, so totally missed the fact that if you have 90 pound people and 350 pound people (a pretty god-damned common situation in a big building), your design will move too fast for the fatties and will not budge for the skinnies
W-And with reprehensible irresponsibility, not once did they lower their audience's expectations for solutions like this by mentioning the extreme cost of rare earth or neodymium magnets, especially in that quantity
W-So next time there's a disaster, some poor building engineer will have to answer to why he didn't implement a safety system more expensive than the building because of this stupid fucking show
tkurcI've never seen the show (I think), but I'll join Spartacus in his boycott!

Fatties Gonna Die

W-Apparently, fatties don't use seatbelts since they cut into their corpulent girth
W-"I hate seat belts because they always seem to ride up and strangle me," said Peggy Howell, the public relations director for the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance.
W-The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance?
W-You've gotta be an awfully ugly lonely fatty to want to wake up every day trying to convince the world that being fat is, in fact, cool
W-I'm so glad I don't work in an industry where I would have to worry whether my product is useable by the morbidly obese

tkurcone of my favourite directors is directing the hobbit!
tkurcI actually liked "The Hobbit", as opposed to LOTR
tkurcand del toro actually has made good movies, unlike Jackson
tkurcyes, I'm looking at you, Frighteners
W-I hated Pan's Labyrinth, it was a story of a drunk wife beater instead of what all the previews made it out to be
W-And the previews for Hellboy II seem like a departure in the wrong direction
W-And he's working on twelve other projects right now
W-Come 2011, we'll come back to this thread and see if my skepticism was justified
tkurclike the internet will be around then.
tkurcmy guess is that the guy who played Abe Sapien will play Gollum
tkurctake that, 2011
tkurcso, does making one bad movie instantly make someone a bad director?
W-it just instills skepticism into a franchise that is switching directors
tkurcBlade II was better than Blade
W-Even though he did good stuff in the 80s and 90s, I won't see another sci-fi Spielberg movie after he butchered AI, Minority Report, and War of the Worlds
tkurcI kind of liked Minority Report. The ads that followed them around were cool.
W-I liked Blade III. I thought Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel were in their best roles of their careers
tkurcthats not saying much. Their track records are only hair better than peter jackson

W-I swear that every user comment on Youtube is in fact dynamically generated content from a bot designed to use the most perfectly poor and atrocious English
W-There's no other explanation that my mind will accept.
W-There's no way that so many real people so consistently use such unfathomably wrong English.
W-Humanity is doomed.
Foibaeyou are reading Youtube comments for the wrong reasons
Foibaeyou can't find a badass Queen video without thousands of comments about how they've accepted that Freddie Mercury was gay, but they've accepted that
tkurcinterestingly I didn't really notice youtube videos had comments
tkurcI think fark trained me to ignore comments
tkurcplus, I hate other people's opinions

When The Empire Strikes Back came out...

posted by (W-) on 2008-01-28 23:03:48 [#984]
W-It was poorly received and underperformed at the box office, as it didn't match the expectations of a Star Wars sequel
W-Without ROTJ and an understanding of the larger story, themes, and universe, the reaction to ESB could be understood
W-Now, nearly 5 years after the final Matrix installment, I'm curious what you guys think was the best film, looking back with a longer perspective
W-I still prefer the 2nd one, which was an unpopular preference at the time
W-Same question goes for the Star Wars prequels, which while Phantom Menace is nearly 9 years old, ROTS is not yet 3
W-I think that, if you suspend disbelief through the bad emotions and dialogue of Anakin and Padme, both AOTC and ROTS are pretty darn good times
tkurcI still don't know what to think about the matrix
tkurcI liked the 1st a lot, and it stands well on its own
tkurcI liked the 3rd because my expectations were low, and I had fun watching things blow up
W-OK? We'll come back to it in another 5 years? 2013 it is!
tkurcI'll set my alarm clock

I never would have come up with this myself...

W-After 20 years, I encounter someone who thinks the recreational facilities on the Enterprise D are "hollow decks"
FoibaTechnically correct
W-Yeah, which made me wonder why it actually took 20 years for me to see someone use it
W-Of course, this person wasn't trying to be clever. They were stupid.
FoibaHonestly, i don't think anyone has ever thought that was a double-entendre
FoibaOr a 1.5 entendre
W-The phrase is used sparsely on the web
W-But not usually in a TNG context
W-But there's about 100 profoundly misguided people
Foiba"Hollow Deck Hibachi Grill" item on the Star Trek Vegas restaurant menu
W-I suppose it isn't spelled out as "Holodeck" too frequently in canon
W-But still, what would make about one in one million people think it was "hollow deck"
FoibaWho will support the hollowgram's fight for human rights?
W-Was there never a clever reference to The Doctor as a "hollow man" ?
FoibaI would've remembered
FoibaHaha, i just searched for ("hollow deck" shakespeare) to be sure, since that would be the only reason they'd use those words in a Trek show
FoibaAnd it's just more Trek sites
FoibaWait, it was used in "Julius Caesar"
